For Shoppers, the New Black Friday is Tomorrow

Retailers, desperate to milk everything they can out of the holiday shopping season, are introducing a second Black Friday. Even though October 30 is usually a night for toilet-papering people’s homes and other pranks, this is no trick.

Well, it is a ploy to get people to shop early, and shop often. The day after Thanksgiving is usually considered Black Friday, a day of major bargains and crazy promotions, which apparently make shoppers behave like lunatics. In most years, it’s the day that truly kicks off the heart (or lack thereof) of the holiday shopping season.

But, as the Washington Post reports, Sears and other retailers are introducing Black Friday-type sales starting a month earlier, on Friday, October 30. Also, the next day, on Halloween itself, Macy’s is handing out $10 gift cards to the first 100 shoppers in its stores.
