Food co-ops help you eat healthy, eat well, and eat inexpensively. One couple credits their local co-op, in Park Slope, Brooklyn, for making it possible to bring their weekly grocery bill down to a mere $15 per person.

That same co-op, however, has been compared to a “Soviet-style re-education camp” for its strict work requirements—membership dues are not enough to allow you to shop there—and the judgmental attitudes of many members and staffers. A writer describes her experience being kicked out and blacklisted by the co-op in the NY Times.
