Sears Enters Book Wars with a Bonus: $9 Credit, Even if You Buy from a Competitor

Amazon is already duking it out with Wal-Mart and Target in the competition for new book sales, and now Sears is getting in on the action in a big way with its “Keep America Reading” promotion.

If you’ve bought any of ten expected bestsellers, including new books from Dean Koontz, John Grisham, James Patterson, or Sarah Palin, Sears wants to give you a discount on a future purchase. That goes even if you’ve purchased these books from Wal-Mart, Target, or Amazon.

Here’s how the promotion works: If you’ve bought any of ten select books from one of these three Sears competitors, Sears will give you an online credit good equal to that amount (probably $10 or so) for your next Sears purchase of $45 or more. Or, if you buy any of the ten select books at Sears.com, you’ll receive a $9 credit off of your next online Sears purchase. To qualify, you must register and, if appropriate, e-mail your receipt for books bought online from Wal-Mart, Target, or Amazon.
