Living with the Recession in Detroit, Atlanta, NYC, and Iowa City

In case you missed it, this past Sunday’s New York Times had a four-pack of fascinating, off-beat stories about how people are coping with the recession and troubling local economies in their respective cities: Iowa City, Atlanta, New York, and Detroit.

The stories are alternatingly enlightening, sad, and funny, all written honestly—and written well. The Detroit one is especially good. It’s about how bicycling is growing in the city, with bike shops opening and more and more bikers hitting the streets, which tend to be barren otherwise. So ironic for a city that was so dependent on the automobile for so long.
