Marketplace interview and other book PR news

I just taped an interview about my book with Kai Ryssdal for Marketplace, which you should be able to hear this some afternoon/evening soon on your local public radio station. I forgot to bring a glass of water with me into the studio and my mouth was for some reason extremely parched, so that explains any ostentatious lip-licking you might hear in the middle of the interview. (I’m hoping you don’t hear any lip licking, but just in case …) I’m also scheduled to talk about the book on Morning Joe Wednesday morning at about 8:30. Guess I’ll be able to keep my mouth lubricated with Starbucks there.

And, just to keep everybody up to date—whether you want to be or not—the book was reviewed last week by The Washington Post, the Financial Times, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, the Economist and my former employer The Birmingham News. And Joe Nocera wrote about it in his column in the New York Times. So the book’s meteoric rise in the Amazon bestseller rankings (it got as high as #30 overall last week, just ahead of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) was entirely a mainstream-media-manufactured phenomenon. Now we’ll get to see if it has any actual staying power. It has slid down to #106 at the moment, but I’ve got to think that’s partly the result of Amazon having run out of books (they’ll get more in the next couple days). On the other hand, I never really dreamed it would crack the top 100, so I guess I ought to be happy with where it is.

Update: Sorry, thought the Marketplace interview was for tonight. Shows how much I know about radio. Oh, and Amazon’s got the book in stock again.
