Manhattan is safe… for now

I’m at work late. Why? I don’t know. I should go.

Anyway, I’m here, so I saw that Starbucks just announced its first round of store closings. Go here to see if your favorite store is set to be axed. They’ve only posted the first 50 (out of about 600), so no one is out of the woods yet.

The first volley hit Mobile and Las Vegas particularly hard. Interestingly, none announced so far in Manhattan, which seems like one super-penetrated market that might go for some pruning. As long as it’s not the one on 52nd Street just east of 7th Avenue.

Apple CEO Cook Gives Up $75M in Stock Dividends

NEW YORK — Apple CEO Tim Cook is giving up $75 million in dividends on restricted stock that the company is awarding to all of its employees.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Apple Inc. said that Cook requested that his restricted stock units not receive dividends. The dividends that Apple workers are getting amount to $2.65 per quarter for each restricted stock unit held. The shares are not normally eligible to receive dividends, so Apple’s decision is a perk for its employees.

Vegas I get (the local economy’s in the tank). But the Mobile closings (4 out of 10 stores in the metro area) are really weird. This must be explained!

Good morning, Justin. I’m going to see some Starbucks people on Monday. I’ll ask.

One possibility is that 10 Starbuckses for a not particularly Starbucksian place like Mobile was just plain excessive.

  • Barbara Kiviat

Yeah, apparently their real estate strategy got away from them.

More importantly: It’s a beautiful day. You should take CC Jr. outside and play. (Or is the blogging more about procrastinating book work?)
