Greetings from Madison

I guess I should mention at some point that I’m writing this week from America’s most insanely livable city, Madison, Wisconsin. Above is the view from my table at the Fair Trade Coffee House on State Street, where I’m typing these very words. Here’s a view down State Street toward the Capitol:

I’m in Madison because I’m the “Business Writer in Residence” at the University of Wisconsin’s journalism and business schools. Which mainly means I go to classes and jabber. This was my first, Scott Troyan’s 9:30 communication class at the business school:

Anyway, I’ve got a column to write this afternoon. But I’m sure I’ll have more thrilling news to report from Madison in the coming days.

Apple CEO Cook Gives Up $75M in Stock Dividends

NEW YORK — Apple CEO Tim Cook is giving up $75 million in dividends on restricted stock that the company is awarding to all of its employees.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Apple Inc. said that Cook requested that his restricted stock units not receive dividends. The dividends that Apple workers are getting amount to $2.65 per quarter for each restricted stock unit held. The shares are not normally eligible to receive dividends, so Apple’s decision is a perk for its employees.

How about a picture from inside the student union beer hall? How about quaffing a few brews as well? And grab a bag of fresh popcorn. Remember this is Wisconsin. Home of Joe McCarthy. And left wing students who taught UCBerkeley everything.

Thanks for the props, Justin. We kinda agree (most of the time).
But Tail Gunner Joe’s home was Appleton, GLD; Madison was home to the Joe Must Go movement. And we would not be so brash as to claim pre-eminence over either Berkeley or Ann Arbor — we were all comrades in the revolution.
But you’re right about the Ratskellar….

Madison Wisconsin = 25 squares miles surrounded by reality.

With that said, I love Mad-town.
